Mohs Hardness scale

The Mohs scale of mineral hardness is an ordinal scale characterising scratch resistance of various minerals through the ability of a harder material to scratch a softer material. It is one of the most important tests for identifying mineral specimens. It was devised by the German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs. The test is useful because most specimens of a given mineral are very close to the same hardness.
